If you have children, you know how important it is to make sure they get the best education possible. Education requires classrooms with good teachers, school supplies, school uniforms plus socks and shoes as most children in Nepal walk to school.
The Nepali government provides school buildings and pays for teachers. They provide some school supplies and a nourishing lunch for the children. Parents are responsible for uniforms, other clothing and school supplies. Sometimes parents have to make tough choices between food, medicine and they don't have the money to cover school expenses.
That's what motivated several Nepal visitors to start a village backpack project!
Nepal's Village Backpack Project
Backpack projects have been started to support many causes around the world, from food insecurity in the US to creating jobs for women in Africa. Our Nepal Backpack Project started in 2016 to help school children in the Dandagaun Village, about 36 km (23 mi) as the crow flies … northwest of Kathmandu.
Most families in Dandagaun Village grow their own food, along with raising chickens, goats and cattle. This means they're able to feed their families but often lack extra money for school expenses. So the Nepal Backpack Project helps by providing each student with:
- Sturdy backpack to carry their books to and from school.
- School uniforms consisting of a jacket with the school description plus matching pants and two t-shirts. In the past we've also provided socks and shoes but the kids feet grow so fast that we've dropped these and added one shirt.
- School supplies including paper notebooks, pencil case, pencils and a pencil sharpener.
Want to Join Our Backpack Project Group?
To date we've distributed backpacks to 375 students at three schools, every other school year. We'd like to expand the program to more school as your participation grows.
It's fun watching the children grow over the years, especially when they move up to the secondary school. We also enjoy seeing younger brothers and sisters wearing uniforms that have been passed down from their older siblings.
Here are the different ways you can contribute to our Nepal Backpack Project. All participants will get a monthly newsletter sharing a story about one of our backpack students … written by secondary school students.
- Donate one backpack to our program … for $40.
- When visiting Nepal, add a one “long day trip” from Kathmandu, to visit one of the schools participating on our backpack program.
- Join our 3-day homestay visit to Dandagaun Village where you'll stay with a local family and experience life in Nepal. You'll also get to participate in handing out backpacks to students at one of our schools.
